It is possible for the version of the JRE to be different than the version of the JDK. When launching a Java application through the command line, the system uses the default JDK. There can be multiple JDKs installed on a system, as many as you wish. See 'Note for Users of OS X that Include Apple Java 6 Plug-in'. If you have not yet installed Apple's Java OS X 2012-006 update, then you are still using a version of Apple Java 6 that includes the plug-in and the Java Preferences app. Determining the Default Version of the JDK
